Immigrant Convicted of DUI in Alabama Forced to Remain in U.S.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – An immigrant residing in Alabama who has been arrested 35 times over the past 12 years is forced to remain in the country because the U.S. does not recognize his homeland.

According to the Birmingham News, federal authorities have tried to extradite convicted felon Sofyan Eldani, 45, but have been unable to do so because the U.S. does not recognize his native Palestine as a country.

However, even though Eldani claims he is a native of Palestine, he carries an Egyptian passport.

Eldani has been convicted at least nine times of crimes including DUI, assault, fraud, burglary, drug possession, probation violation, possession of a drug paraphernalia, and a slew of others. Four of his convictions are felonies.

Eldani has also served six months in an Alabama prison for receiving stolen property. Most recently, Eldani was arrested for possession of crack cocaine.

Since he cannot be returned to Palestine, at least for now, Eldani will remain in Alabama and face his most recent DUI charge in state court.
