A national road safety group has decided to take matters into its own hands, pleading with states to mandate the installation of ignition interlock devices on the vehicles of all DUI convicts.
The issue at hand is whether to make the devices mandatory for everyone convicted of DUI or just repeat offenders and those convicted of serious DUI offenses.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) said that requiring the devices for all convicted drunken drivers reduces the chance they will repeat the crime.
“An interlock law that covers all people convicted of DUI reduces recidivism by 11-12%,” said Anne McCartt, IIHS vice president for research and chief author of the study.
Currently, 15 states have adopted this law and seven others – Florida, Massachusetts, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin are considering it.
However, the American Probation and Parole Association said that “requiring ignition interlocks for all DWI offenders is an unnecessary and costly response.”
Unfortunately, it is also costly to hire drunk driving lawyers and to clean up the mess left behind from a DUI accident. The fines and penalties associated with DUI convictions are also costly, not only leading the offender to pay thousands of dollars, have their license revoked and be taken to prison, but can also affect a motorist’s personal life too. DUI convictions can get a motorist fired from their job and also affect their civil rights.
If you have been arrested for DUI, contact a top drunk driving lawyer immediately to file a case. Drunk driving lawyers will make sure that your charges are either reduced or totally wiped out and will see to it your case ends as quickly as possible.
