Posted in WICHITA, Kansas – Fourteen people were arrested as a result of a DUI checkpoint near Old Town over the weekend.
Wichita police are cracking down on drunken drivers as the holidays quickly approach. Officers ran the checkpoint from 10:30 p.m. Saturday night to 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning on Washington, near Kellogg.
According to officers, 14 people were arrested on several charges. Three motorists were driving with a blood alcohol level over2.5 times the legal limit of .08 percent. Three others were cited for open containers, two were minors in possession and one person had a suspended license.
Although driving under the influence rates rise during the holidays, authorities said they were shocked by the high number of motorists that were arrested in just two days’ time. A lieutenant with the Wichita police department believes there were a higher number of drunken drivers due to both Christmas party festivities as well as because of a Wichita Thunder game.
